You know what, I’m just gonna go ahead and say it.

Sailor Moon Crystal has some of the worst animation I have ever seen in a modern anime.

And no, I’m not talking about faces that either look nice or bad during still shots, I’m talking actual animation, “the process of creating motion and shape change illusion by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images”.

I’ve mentioned before how whenever the people working on Crystal are forced to draw movement (because lord knows they clearly want to keep the characters as still as possible), it comes off as looking incredibly stiff and unnatural.

Along with that, it often looks very choppy, which happens when there are too few frames to create a sense of smooth transition and movement, and often those frames are poorly drawn too, which makes the result even worse.

But hey, you know, whatever, right?

As bad as it looks, at least I can tell what’s going on, right?

But then, there’s THIS scene.

JESUS CHRIST, WHERE DO I EVEN START, LET ME MAKE A FUCKING LIST.

1. There are way too many different shots that are way too zoomed in to create any sense of what the flying fuck is happening.
2. Rather than making it look like Usagi is getting dizzy, it feels more like she suddenly starts ducking and bouncing.
3. The heel of Usagi’s shoe doesn’t even touch the ground as she goes stumbling backwards.
4. She sends her bag flying as if she threw it with all her strength even though she’s supposed to be losing her balance.
5. We see her body going upwards before we get the quick shot of Tuxedo Mask and then suddenly he’s pulling her up from a fall.
6. Her bag lightly falls on the ground yet bounces back up way more than the impact and weight of it suggests it would.

All this in 8 seconds.

There is no excusing how poorly animated this show is. If people enjoy it despite its flaws, that’s wonderful, but let’s stop pretending that said flaws aren’t there and aren’t horrendous.
