i remember playing the katawa shoujo demo and saying to myself “this game is going to be so awful and people are just going to eat it up” and lo and fucking behold

Katawa Shoujo conflicts me because like on the one hand it treats those with disabilities as just normal people, but with handicaps. Thus you should not discriminate against people with disabilities. And that people with disabilities can and should be loved.

… but on the other it fetishizes them. It’s … sort of like they’re saying “love them because they’re broken”, not “love them in spite of their problems or differences that make life a little harder for them.” I realize that was not several of the development team’s intent, but that’s the message I get from reading message boards about it. The only main character whose development does not culminate (i.e., making it the “prize” of the game) in a raunchy and unnecessary sex scene is the lesbian, and surprise, she doesn’t get a real character development path. Not to mention that misogynist Harry Potter looking conspiracy theorist is loved by the fanbase- not in the love-to-hate way either like with well-written villains, no. Like “he’s a good person, I really like him!” way.

I feel like it COULD have been great from the aspect of portraying disabled people as just people… but it just does too many things wrong.

Of course, this is only my interpretation and if someone else with disabilities liked the game, hey, power to ya, I’m glad it empowered you. I just got a very different message from what I played and then observed.

most visual novels with H content are really bad though cause everything builds up to the sex scenes as if it’s a “prize”, like you said, and it’s as if the game is saying “well, here it is hehe, the moment u have been waiting for….the hot sex!!!! O_O” and the way that the H scenes are written so awkwardly and show no regard for the characters’ previously established personalities in favor of making everything as LEWD~~~ as possible doesn’t help either
