Free! isn’t rlly that good of a show  (inmyopinion) and to be frank it seems kind of awful to me and it’s like an all-male version of those terribad fanservice shows that are all about sexualizing everything they can and reusing super unfunny animay jokes like ha!! he fell on top of her and grabbed her breast accidentally!!! The first episode was full of scenes where the camera just panned over their abs and swimwear-clad crotches in the middle of the dialogue and it was really awkward and the kind of obvious pandering that makes it embarrassing to watch certain shows. Like the creators are like “now to show u wat u came for….nAKED HOTNESS BUY THE BLURAYS BUY THE BLURAYS BUY THE BLURAYS" and this is annoying to me. But enough of my OPINIONS ok

I dunno about Sankaku Complex (that site is actually terrible in general and you should avoid it at all costs and not take anything you read there seriously, it has the highest concentration of annoying neckbeards that i’ve ever seen anywhere and i browse 4chan) or whatever, but a lot of the male posters on /a/, from what I’ve seen, were really excited about this show because of the homolust (like with Code Geass). A lot of them don’t have any problems with the heavily implied yaoi and that’s even part of the reason for why they’re watching it in the first place. They made up a pretty significant amount of the people who saw the swimming anime CM months ago and said “why can’t we have an anime about cute boys swimming and being fabulous wouldn’t that be awesome", I’m sure. The people who seriously complain about “fujoshits ruining the anime industry" are a vocal minority.  I think you should also keep in mind that some of the people who are leaving comments like that are doing it to get a reaction out of the female fans just for the heck of it. The people who say stuff like that are also just bumrumpled because they wanted kyoani to make something different (because the past few shows they’ve put out like Tamako Market and Hyouka were disappointing) and instead kyoani just slapped together the same formula they’ve been using forever (the daily lives of highschool friends who are in a club together!!) but with a male cast instead of an all-female cast as if that made any difference aside from pandering to the fujoshi crowd instead of the neckbeards who fap over cute girls eating cake and talking about nothing. This is why some people feel betrayed. There are tons of Free! threads going on right now, and many of them are filled with people discussing the show excitedly or talking about their OTPs and shit. The whole backlash against the show is totally exaggerated and somewhat misunderstood. It isn’t “boo hoo why do they have to make shows for women, why can’t they make more shows for men???! sHAME ON WOMEN FOR HAVING WEIRD SEXUAL INTERESTS" it’s more like “why is kyoani making another bad show instead of straying from the typical highschool slice of life formula and making something new and refreshing" 
Sure, Free! is animated well (as expected of kyoani : ^) ), it is very visually striking and the swimming theme is cool, but they could have done so much more with it if they just got out of their comfort-zone instead of sticking to the formula and making it so obvious that they want your money. The best japanininiananamation animey chinese cartoons, in my opinion, are the shows that can appeal to both genders. And if u would take a look at the anime charts from last season and the winter season you’d see that there are actually a bunch of shows that cater to female viewers, like Chihayafuru, Amnesia, Cuticle Tantei Inaba, Uta no Prince-sama, etc that people had no issues with. 
Not everything has to be girls vs boys or SEXISM!!! ok. Some people are ignorant, entitled dickwads but some people just don’t like the show because they just…don’t like it and it has nothing to do with homophobia or misogyny

Trying to explain the idea of being an otherkin to your parents  is harder then asking your best friend to stop sitting on your invisible tail. At least my therapist understands. She let’s me run around with my tail on in public, understands when I have to cover my ears when people whistle, and my face pressing up against the glass when I’m watching the foxes at the zoo. (and when I sit there for hours, crying when we leave.)
