La #SaintPatrick :ie: en France c’est d’habitude plutôt une excuse pour aller dans un pub irlandais ☘️ ... mais pas cette année :sweat:. C’est la fête nationale de l’Irlande certes, mais c’est surtout la fête nationale célébrée dans le plus grand nombre de pays au monde (les irlandais ont voyagé :wink:)... et même dans l’ISS. Pour fêter ça aujourd’hui je vous emmène dans l’ouest de l’Irlande, où les paysages sculptés par le vent sont en prise directe avec les caprices de l’atlantique.

Très heureux de l'annonce de Josef Aschbacher: je devrais devenir le 4e commandant européen de la Station spatiale internationale, à la fin de ma mission. Je suis fier de recevoir cet honneur ! Si tout se passe comme prévu, je serai le premier commandant français de l’ISS, après les astronautes de l’ESA Frank De Winne, Alexander Gerst et Luca Parmitano. Le commandant de la Station est en quelque sorte le capitaine du vaisseau. Bien sûr, la majorité des décisions sont prises par le Centre de contrôle en collaboration avec l’équipage, mais le commandant est la voix des astronautes en orbite. Et s’il faut faire des choix rapidement (en cas d’urgence par exemple), c’est aussi le rôle du commandant.

The ESA Director General announced during today's Mission Alpha briefing: I shall become the fourth European commander of the Space Station at the end of the mission. Honoured to be chosen for this role! If it happens, I will be the first French commander of the Space Station, following from the ESA astronauts Frank De Winne, Alexander Gerst and Luca Parmitano, and this is thanks to the great work of ESA and CNES and a recognition of that work from the international partners for which I benefit from. The role of Space Station commander is like a captain on a ship, the highest in command. Of course lots of decisions are made by mission control in collaboration with the astronauts, but the commander is the voice of the astronauts in orbit, and quick decisions in case of emergencies are taken by the commander.

Cette première photo résume bien l’état dans lequel je me trouve à 5 semaines du lancement :sweat_smile::joy::wink:!!! C’est la dernière semaine chez moi (à Cologne en Allemagne), avec énormément de choses à régler avant de rejoindre Los Angeles, Houston puis Cape Canaveral et décoller le 22 avril. Il faut mettre sa vie en ordre avant de quitter la terre pour au moins 6 mois, et les sujets personnels se disputent mon temps avec les derniers entraînements ici en Europe... Heureusement, on aura une semaine de repos un peu avant le lancement, histoire de partir en forme. Les photos viennent d’une séance de portrait en scaphandre, quand même à peu près 100 kilos sur le dos :muscle:. On est aidés physiquement par des techniciens spécialistes du scaphandre, qu’on voit sur la deuxième photo ! Un travail d’équipe. J’essaierai pendant les semaines qui viennent de partager quelques photos de l’entraînement de ces derniers mois... si j’ai le temps :sweat_smile:

The first photo shows how I feel just five weeks from launch :sweat_smile::joy::wink:! This is the last week that I am at home (in Cologne, Germany) and I have so many things still to do before leaving for Los Angeles, Houston and then Cape Canaveral for launch 22 April. You cannot just leave Earth for six months without taking care of a bit of administration and personal matters… Luckily we have a week of rest before launch, to recuperate. The images are from a photo shoot in the EMU spacesuit, carrying around 100 kg on my back. Of course we have some technicians to help us as you can see on the second photo. Teamwork as always. I will share some photos from the last few months of training… if I have time :sweat_smile:.
