Alicante in Valencia, Spain, on the Costa Blanca. Its harbour has a special jetty for the #OceanRace that has started here four times.

Mark in his crew quarters

Mark in his crew quarters

The International Space Station sometimes feels like a student house. During the week we are all busy working, on our own schedules, running experiments and pass each other by without having time to chat. At night we retreat to our own rooms to talk to our families and study for the day ahead. I took this picture of Mark in his crew quarters as I passed by on the way to my own. Mark joined the NASA astronaut corps at the same time as I joined ESA as an astronaut. That's not the only thing we have in common, we were both on the Space Station in 2017 (but we didn't meet up in space then) and were on a NEEMO underwater training mission together. Yesterday Mark spent two hours working on the Celestial Immunity experiment in the Japanese Kibo laboratory. He was exempt from cleaning duties to finish up this experiment :) Mark arrived here on his second Soyuz flight, so he has spent a lot of time training in Russia and speaks the language very well… that might be why he has both versions of his nametag on his door :ru:

Eye of Richat

Eye of Richat

If there is one picture that is the cliché :camera: for astronauts in space, it is the Richat structure, also known as the Eye of Sahara or Guelb er Richat. We have all taken a picture or two (yes I have multiple from the Proxima mission, including a collage of many photos similar to what I did with Los Angeles: www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2021/05/Richat_reassembled) It is easy to spot as it is 50 km wide and so striking. In addition there are rarely clouds in this area, meaning it is always available for a photoshoot.
