Manipulation de bactéries buccales dans le cadre de l’expérience américaine Oral Biofilm. La boîte à gants (ici une version portable – les autres étaient occupées au même moment) est évidemment indispensable. Pas question de propager quoi que ce soit dans l’environnement très protégé de la Station ! Comme toujours, c’est le comportement en impesanteur passé à la loupe qui intéressent les chercheurs. Ils espèrent en apprendre plus pour mettre au point de meilleurs traitements contre les caries, les inflammations de gencives ou encore les pyorrhées… Ceux qui en auront fait l’expérience pourront confirmer : la bonne santé bucco-dentaire, on a tendance à la considérer comme acquise avant qu’il ne soit trop tard… :grimacing:

Working on the Oral Biofilms experiment (pictures by Megan). Researchers are investigating bacteria and how they form biofilms, and how they adapt to weightlessness. We use the glovebox to keep the experiment fluids contained. We don't want them floating around the space station, thank you! However the bacteria in question grow naturally in our mouths, the research is interested in finding out more about the biofilms that grow on our tongues or teeth. Will they still grow as well in space, and can we find ways to stop them?
