A different view of Earth

Petit changement de perspective : l’ISS vole en général toujours dans la même orientation, segment russe à l’arrière, panneaux solaires sur le côté, et la même face pointant vers la terre. Ça signifie donc que la Station tourne lentement sur elle-même, avec un lent mouvement de tangage vers le bas, dans son orbite autour de la terre. Quand un vaisseau vient s’y amarrer, on arrête parfois temporairement cette rotation pour faciliter la phase d’approche finale et lui donner une cible plus fixe. Il arrive même qu’on modifie carrément l’orientation de l’ISS dans les grandes largeurs, ça a été le cas lors de l’arrivée du module MLM par exemple. On le voit ici, la Cupola ne pointe alors plus vers la Terre uniquement et peut montrer… d’autres choses, comme l’horizon et parfois même un lever de Lune :)
There’s something out of the ordinary on these pictures taken from the Cupola observatory: They show the horizon as well as Earth! Usually the Space Station flies with its belly to the Earth and Cupola points downward. To keep its belly facing down as we orbit the planet, the Space Station has to constantly pitch down. But when spacecraft dock with it, we change our way of controlling the Station’s orientation, so the arriving spacecraft don't have to accommodate a constantly revolving target. Sometimes we even rotate the Space Station 90 or 180 degrees (we can do wat we want and fly backwards or upside down, unlike a plane). For our most recent docking on the Russian side of the house, we pitched 90 degrees. It’s like rotating your entire home (and workplace) to the side, and the window that always shows Earth can suddenly show... something else! Here’s wat the view was like: we could even see the moonrise!
