A study estimates that 10 million jobs in the UK could be replaced by
automation by 15 years from now. That's roughly one third of all jobs.
I suppose the situation in the US is roughly similar.
Under a plutocratic state, this will be a disaster for all working
people, an opportunity to drive wages and working conditions down, and
destroy what remains of unions. If roughly one third of all people
die from this, the plutocrats won't mind. Meanwhile, technocrats will
admire the deadly efficiency of it all.
In a democratic society, we can choose which kinds of automation to
permit. We need to restore democracy, urgently, for this reason among
many others.
