Amazon has told thug departments that for one year they cannot use its
face recognition system.
However, there are other face recognition systems that thugs can use.
To ban thug departments from using face recognition directly is
insufficient. What about when Clearview AI turns itself into a
general service for tracking people, without saying how it localized
them?
We have to make it illegal to set up a system
to do systematic face recognition or other biometric tracking.
The danger of false matches is a secondary issue. As long as such
errors are common, they will make it easy for anyone to argue, "That
was a false match &emdash; I wasn't there." To understand the real danger
we face, imagine that someday computer face recognition is perfect.
