As the US government sells more oil leases in the Gulf of Mexico, each one making it harder to avoid global climate disaster, it is moving the sales to a web site so that people have no place to protest any more.

Digital technology allows the powerful to act in secret while enabling them to snoop on the rest of us.

Addiction

Thinking of addiction as a disease is not the whole truth. Partly it is a habit.

There is some truth in this, but the idea that addition is all in the mind is definitely false. The crucial point about addiction is that ceasing use of the drug causes physical symptoms.

Coal industry

With the demand for US coal falling, and coal companies going bankrupt, now is a great time for the US government to buy the entire coal industry and shut it down.

Oxfam reports that coal is bad for human health as well as the ecosphere's health, and inferior to renewable energy for providing electricity to poor people.

China's coal use peaked in 2014.

The name "Anthropocene" is an ill-advised choice — people's eagerness to use it confirms the argument.
