Right to mock other people

Canada's supreme court has defended the right to mock other people.

This is a central part of freedom of speech. If it were illegal to mock people and hurt their feelings, you can bet that the first people you would be punished for mocking would be greedy billionaires and right-wing politicians.

Buying homes in flood zones

New Zealand is buying out the homes that are endangered by the spreading flood zones. It's much cheaper than trying to hold back the floods.

I would admire the people who stubbornly refuse to move, if their firm stand could dissuade floods. But the only way to do that is by curbing global heating.

Urgent: block merger of Amazon and MGM

US citizens: call on the FTC to block the proposed merger of Amazon and MGM.

Any merger that includes (or results in) a large company is harmful; the details can make it even more harmful, or not.

Greenhouse gases

Global heating effects including fires and droughts, plus deforestation, have turned some important forests into net emitters of greenhouse gases.

This shows several examples of positive-feedback effects that magnify the consequences of our emissions. These examples are well-known, but we keep discovering new ones. Meanwhile, some countries are falsifying their progress by citing forests that don't really exist.
