Shenanigan Patches

On the occasion of Europe Day, I had to take a photo of the coolest of all patches: ESA astronaut class of 2009, “the shenanigans”. We are six astronauts from different European countries and what connects us is also our belief in the European project. We represent not only our respective nations and ESA but what can be achieved when we work together as an international team, as we did during our training.
Lots of stories go into the name and the design of the patch, I will tell only a few: the patch is shaped like the cupola, has 6 stars for the 6 members of the selection, and sports the motto of the astronaut corps. The rest is secret… Awesome design by my friend Vincent Gibaud, based on a mix of ideas from the class members and the people at spacepatches.nl
Cette photo tombe à pic pour la journée de l’Europe : voilà le patch officiel de la promotion 2009 des astronautes de l’ESA (« shenanigans » autoproclamés) ! Au-delà de notre profession, ce qui nous unit, c’est définitivement notre attachement et notre confiance en l’Europe. C’est elle aussi que je représente, en même temps que la France.
Il y aurait beaucoup à dire sur la conception de ce patch ; je vais me contenter de quelques détails : il a la forme de la Cupola (qui est une contribution européenne à la Station ;)), a autant d’étoiles que de membres et porte notre devise. Merci à mon ami Vincent Gibaud pour le design, d’après nos idées et les conseils de l’équipe derrière spacepatches.nl !
