La saison des aurores australes est de retour ! Ou plutôt, notre orbite et le vent solaire nous ont permis d’en observer à nouveau, personne ne va s’en plaindre :heart_eyes: Un détail quand même : le Soyouz qui photobombe les images n’est plus celui d’Oleg : c’est le vaisseau d’Anton :)

Aurora season is back! Our orbits and the solar wind have made the aurora visible again. No one is complaining! :heart_eyes: One thing has changed... the Soyuz in the foreground is now Anton's, and no longer Oleg's :)

Je ne suis toujours pas allé en Australie mais il va falloir réparer ça un jour : cette île-continent présente vraiment les paysages les plus somptueux du monde vus du ciel, je ne me permets pas de douter que c'est tout aussi époustouflant vu de près!

I have never been to Australia but the country is a constant supplier of three-star #EarthArt, it is hard to judge from space if a landscape will be as amazing up close, but I definitely want to go and check regardless! Well… I said that after my first mission already… but this time no weak excuse like being assigned to another mission… maybe…

J’ai ENFIN découvert le secret d’Aki pour être aussi efficace : il est aidé par des minions ! Pas les petits personnages jaunes et un peu pénibles, mais la minuscule machine argentée qu’on voit derrière lui. MiniON est un séquenceur ADN portable, encore une prouesse technologique incroyable quand on considère le chemin parcouru depuis la découverte de cette molécule. Aki l’utilise pour analyser le génome de bactéries, dans l’idée de voir si elles ont changé ou évolué dans l’espace. Il y a 20 ans, cette simple idée était encore de la science-fiction, et parfois c’est difficile de réaliser que nous sommes l'un des bras de ces technologies

I found out Aki's secret for being so great: he has Minions to help him! I don't mean us crew, nor the yellow irritating cartoon characters, I mean the (very small) silver machine behind him. The MiniON is a DNA sequencer that is portable, which is frankly mind-blowing considering how quickly DNA research has advanced since its discovery. Aki is using it for the Biomole experiment that takes samples of bacteria on the Space Station, extracts their DNA for examination, and then sequences it... to see if it has changed and evolved. The photos show him preparing the amplified DNA to be put in the Minion machine. Just 20 years ago this would have been science fiction, and for me it still feels like it. Portable devices that can scan DNA and analyse life-forms in space, and it is all happening right now while I did something else, I wish I had some minions too... :wink:
