A lot of people like to see morality as a clear line dividing the world between good and bad, white and black. As Randall Munroe would say: ” My hobby: making a thought experiment to test where exactly they put this line” (XKCD point, checked).

When I told you why I was a pirate, I received a lot of reactions telling me that I was only trying to give a justification to something inherently bad. When I wrote an open letter to artists and suggested a new way of being paid, I also had those kind of reactions and I was told that I had to respect the artist’s choice. If the artist doesn’t want to be found on The Pirate Bay, it was inherently bad to download his content there.

Inherently bad? But to what extend?

Let say that I legally bought a CD from an artist which is against the evil pirates of the internet. You know what I mean.

Is it bad to rip the CD to my hard disk and make MP3 files? Probably not.

I regularly backup my data on an external USB disk. The MP3 are then also on that disk. Is it bad? I would say no.

Being tired of the music, I sell the CD in a second hand store. Or I give it for free to a friend. Is that bad? Some would say that I have to delete the MP3s from my computer. Being honest, I do it. I delete the files.

One week later, my hard drive crashes. Hopefully, I have a week old backup and I restore from there. At this point, the MP3s are restored too. But, being busy recovering important files, I completely forgot those MP3s.

Am I a pirate because I have illegal MP3s on my computer? Even if I forgot about it? Is that morally bad? If yes, then piracy is the mere possession of a given information on a computer. In that case, listening to a streaming website should be OK, isn’t it? I can also make all my friends become pirates just by sending them the files. As long as they don’t delete the email and empty the trash, they are pirates! So, I would guess that only having the file is not inherently bad.

What if I didn’t originally bought the CD but received it for free from a friend who was tired of it? And who had a backup too?

When I listen to music, it’s usually random. There’s then a good chance that I will listen to those MP3. Do I become a pirate when I listen to the music, even if I forgot that I sold the CD weeks ago? If yes, then I’m also a pirate when my neighbour listen to loud music.

Or do I become a pirate when I realise that I don’t have the CD and willingly choose to not delete the music? Then, being a pirate is only a thought, it’s something completely intangible in your head.

I don’t know what you think but, to me, living in a society where you can be punished for a thought is probably the worst nightmare I can dream of.

In fall 2014, BlackMa.il made the buzz. The startup is nonetheless very discreet. A simple CrowIT logo on a letterbox, a hallway, a lift and I am in the lair. Here, zero multicolored balls lying on the ground, zero ostensious accessories: a handful of grey desks and a dozen employees starring at their screens without paying attention to my visit.

With a tainted irony, the principal’s office displays “John Doe.” It is true that the creator of this London-based company prefers to remain anonymous. Respecting this was a requirement to grant me an interview.

The man is tall and has a bald head. Jovial, he rises from his chair to greet me. He looks humble and immediately puts me at ease while I pull out my dictaphone. I feel like I’m meeting a friendly grandfather running a small grocery store.

Hello Mr Doe. Thank you for this meeting. I think you do not give many interviews.

To tell the truth, it is the first time a journalist is allowed to enter this office. But I guess that’s the price of success…

Success, let’s talk about it. Blackma.il is only six months old and already showing an income of tens of millions of dollars. All of that without any VC funding. How do you explain this?

Unlike the majority of so-called social web companies, I have not tried to make a trendy service or to attract millions of users. I just asked myself the question: what would people be willing to pay?

The answer became clear at a time when everyone sees his intimacy unveiled on Google or Facebook. Before, we were paying to spread information. Nowadays, this information is public by default. The corollary is obvious: people will then pay to keep some information confidential.

And how does BlackMa.il practically work?

Rather than go fishing ourselves, we prefer to leave it to our users and to share half of our profits with them. Our users find hidden information and we offer them 50% of our profit.

But who is paying?

Those who wish to keep an information secret. An example: I witness that you cheat on your husband. I took a picture with my phone during one of your tryst. I send this photo on BlackMa.il with the sum I’m requesting, say € 1,000, and the email address of your husband.

From this point, you have one month to answer. After a month without response from you, Blackma.il will send the original photo to your husband. We call it the  ”recipient” in our jargon. If you pay € 1000, the case is closed and the photo is not sent. You can also buy some hesitation time at 10% of the requested price per month. In our case, every € 100 buys you a month. After a year, we consider the matter as concluded. It means you only pay for 2 more months to spread the payment.

50% of the money goes directly to our informant and you will never know his identity. We even care to remove all hidden information from pictures and videos.

Is it legal?

It heavily depends on the country and is different for each particular case. For this reason, the company that manages BlackMa.il is offshored. This office only hosts CrowIT, the consulting firm that provides computer expertise to BlackMa.il.

I know it might be surprising but we didn’t have the slightest threat of litigation so far.

How do you explain this? People should probably be upset to have to pay you!

Firstly, people prefer to avoid scandal. BlackMa.il is a middle man. If you refuse to pay, BlackMa.il is only sending an automatic mail written by another user. It is very difficult to attack, it would be like attacking GMail when someone sends an insult email. Everything was put in place with the help of several legal experts and the offshoring means it is really complicated to legally fight us.

Secondly, we offer guarantees. We explain that we are not responsible for anything but that we do have commitments: we do not accept that the same person have to pay more than once for the same information. Once you have paid € 1,000 for your extramarital affair, you can refute any new request by giving us the transaction number of the first application.

While € 100 is the minimum payment, we encourage informants to make reasonable requests that are more likely to receive a positive response.

We try to be a partner, an intermediary who does not take sides.

What prevents the informant to bypass Blackma.il to request more money a second time?

If you could bypass us, why use Blackma.il firstly? The answer is that Blackma.il offers a zero risk of being identified and facilitates payment. In addition, we have acquired a solid reputation. We guarantee the deletion of any information related to the informant at the end of each case. This way, it becomes impossible to trace the identity of an informant, even for us.

A month ago, a cheaper competitor appeared in Russia. It turned out that after the end of each case, the informants were threatened to have their identity revealed if they did not pay an unexpected amount of money.

I know that Blackma.il is often put in a bad light but we are ethical. This is what differentiates us.

How do you justify the morality of such a business?

Our lives are becoming more transparent. We hide certain aspects of our personality only because of stupid moral conventions. Why couldn’t a woman like you have many lovers? Contraception has obsoleted the need for monogamy.

Somehow, BlackMa.il tries to encourage people to publicly stand. We have many  cases in which the informant claimed to publicize the homosexuality of the subject. More than half stay unheeded. The financial threat pushes these people to make their coming out, to accept themselves. I think this is a very good thing.

In some countries, adultery and homosexuality is still a crime. Don’t you take exceptional measures?

Forcing people to hide their homosexuality is homophobia. This is what must be denounced. By deferring the guilt on the messenger, we justify homophobia and rejection. Everyone should be free to say that someone is gay just like you could say he has blonde hair.

I guess that homosexuality doesn’t cover all of your cases.

Over 80% of our business is sex related: infidelity, addiction to pornography, homosexuality, illegitimate children, going to prostitutes. Sex remains a huge taboo.

On Google Images, you can find images of dead people, images of violence, racism, weapons, nameless horrors. But naked body images are filtered by default. Death, yes. Violence, rejection, yes. Sex, no!

Indirectly, BlackMa.il forces people to accept their sexuality. Visiting a pornographic website does not make you a monster but that is the image we have. Even when we realize that 75% of adults consume pornography.

What about non-sexual cases?

If sex is our main supplier, the second recurring theme is money. Particularly within enterprises. An employee who is witnessing his boss diverting part of the budget. Or a person who realises that someone was scammed by somebody else and asks for a share in the scam.

Those cases are much less numerous but they are much more lucrative. The average amount is multiplied by a thousand.

Can you give an example?

I do not want to say too much. But if you witness someone diverting money, asking for 10% is the most profitable. The recipient is often reluctant to pay more. However, it is not uncommon to witness the diversion of millions or tens of millions.

BlackMa.il here plays a moral role similar to WikiLeaks: it discourages dishonest actions more effectively than any lawsuit threat and preserves the anonymity of the informant.

And BlackMa.il takes 50%?

The fact that we have a strong interest ensures that we wish above all the success of the business. We educate our informants about it. That’s also why we allow the spreading of payment. One non-paid case is a loss for BlackMa.il. It is not in our interest.

I prefer to say that it is a partnership with the informant, especially when one considers that we pay for the infrastructure.

Are you ever bargaining? Handling special cases?

This is one of the great strengths of BlackMa.il: the subject can not contact us other than with a form. He may only answer that he does not pay, that he will pay (monthly or fixed) or request an assimiliation with another previously paid case. There’s no discussion. Moreover, the process is fully automated. The subject knows it and has one month to take a decision.

Do you ever experience remorse?

The vast majority of cases we handle are, in fact, already public. For example, the discussion between the unfaithful husband and his lover can be found on Google in the archives of a forum. This man who is threatened with a revelation of his attendance at a striptease show is already a fan of that show on Facebook. However, he still pays to keep that public information out of his wife’s mailbox.

We are entering in a new transparent society. We can either be hypocrites and hide our differences. Or accept ourselves as we are and accept others without judging.

What about the fundamental right to privacy?

But we respect it! We do not make anything public. The information is only sent to a few selected recipients. Privacy is, for us, as going to the toilet: everyone does it and yet we do not like to do so in public. However, if I send to your husband a picture of yourself taking a piss, he will not be offended. It would be pointless. Unless you always said  to him that you never go to the toilet. In any case, it is not BlackMa.il’s problem and nothing would have been made public.

A word in conclusion?

BlackMa.il is strongly criticized. Publicly, everyone hates it. Yet we have hundreds of thousands of users. Including some of our most ardent critics.

BlackMa.il is to global morality the same shock that WikiLeaks was on world politics. Mankind will be forced to accept differences and stop judging others. BlackMa.il will actually have a positive and peacemaker effect.

For more than a decade, Microsoft Outlook has been acting in a weird way, sometimes sending email content or attachments in a file called “winmail.dat”. Most mail clients were unable to open that strange file.

The logic behind this behaviour is not trivial but the point is that Microsoft was sending mail in a non-standard format. They were guilty of breaking the mail standard and the only sane solution was, obviously, for them to fix MS Outlook.

But it didn’t happened. And people not using MS Outlook received winmail.dat files while Outlook users could exchange information without problems.

Even if it was nothing but a faulty implementation in MS Outlook, some webmails started to transparently convert winmail.dat to a normal mail format: Hotmail, Yahoo and even GMail. It’s not a standard, it’s the sender fault but the receiver is the one who ends complaining. As such, it was fixed on the receiver side. A really bad and disgusting hack.

The result is that a lot of people are now able to receive badly sent MS Outlook emails. If one of your contacts sends such an email to a bunch of friends, only a tiny minority will actually complain.

And because they are a minority, it will be considered that the fault is theirs. “Oh but you are using that strange mail provider/your own server. You are the geek, you do strange things, fix the issue on your side”.

Worst: if you run a business and offer mail services to paying customers, they will complain and get angry at you. They can’t read an email from a potential customer! They are loosing business opportunities because of you! And no, it’s not Microsoft fault : according to the sender, they are the first to complain. And even if it’s Microsoft fault, they don’t care, they just want to read their emails. Which is a perfectly understandable answer.

I call this anecdote the “Winmail.dat Syndrome“. In the Free Software community, we are eager to support standardisation. To blame people who don’t follow a written standard.

But, sometimes, we are blind to the real de facto standard. A standard that might be a piece of shit, a pure accident. A standard that was chosen by nobody. We try to educate people to the fact that their standard is not good, not a “real” one. But, in reality, nobody cares. They just want to use anything that works, even if suboptimal under the hood.

By being picky about using a true written-by-experts standard, we are sometimes only excluding ourselves from the party. We are doing exactly what we are blaming: not acting as everybody else and doing our own protocol that nobody can understand. The fact that our protocol is open and could be implemented by anyone doesn’t matter for the end users. Nobody understands it and we are the troublemakers.

Does it means that we should accept everything and forget about standardisation? Of course not! But shouldn’t we sometimes admit that we’ve lost a battle and that staying “pure” actually harm our end users instead of helping them?

I tend to think that when a project is hurting its users instead of helping them, even with good intentions, something is very wrong about that project.

Si BlackMa.il fut le buzz de l’automne 2014, la startup n’en reste pas moins très discrète. Un simple panneau au nom de CrowIT sur une boîte au lettres, un couloir, un ascenseur et nous voilà dans l’antre. Ici, nulles balles multicolores jonchant le sol, nuls accessoires : quelques bureaux et une dizaine d’employés devant leurs écrans qui ne se retournent même pas à mon passage.

L’homme est grand et a le crâne dégarni. Jovial, il se lève de son fauteuil pour me saluer. Il est simple et me met tout de suite à l’aise tandis que je sors mon dictaphone. J’ai l’impression d’être face à un sympathique grand-père patron d’une petite épicerie familiale.

Bonjour Mr Doe. Merci de me recevoir. Je pense que vous n’accordez pas beaucoup d’interviews.

Pour tout vous avouer, c’est même la première fois qu’un journaliste pénètre dans nos bureaux. Mais je suppose que c’est la rançon du succès…

Le succès, parlons-en. Après seulement six mois d’existence, BlackMa.il affiche déjà plusieurs dizaines de millions d’euros de bénéfice. Et cela avec un investissement sur vos fonds propres. Comment expliquez-vous ce succès ?

Contrairement à la majorité des sociétés de l’ère du web social, je n’ai pas essayé de faire un service à la mode ni d’attirer des millions d’utilisateurs. Je me suis juste posé la question : pour quoi les gens seraient-ils prêts à payer ?

La réponse m’est apparue clairement en cette période où chacun voit son intimité dévoilée sur Google ou sur Facebook. Avant, on payait pour diffuser de l’information. De nos jours cette information est publique par défaut. Le corollaire est évident : on paiera pour garder des informations confidentielles.

Et quelle est la solution pratiquement mise en œuvre par BlackMa.il ?

Plutôt que de partir à la chasse aux informations, nous avons préféré laisser cela à nos utilisateurs et partager nos bénéfices avec eux à hauteur de 50%. Ce sont nos utilisateurs qui trouvent les informations cachées et nous les proposent.

Mais qui paie dans ce cas ?

Ceux qui souhaitent garder une information secrète. Prenons un exemple : je suis témoin du fait que vous trompez votre mari. Je prend une photo avec mon téléphone lors d’un de vos rendez-vous galant. J’envoie cette photo sur BlackMa.il avec la somme que j’exige, disons 1000€ et l’adresse email de votre mari.

À partir de ce moment, vous avez un mois pour réagir. Si au bout d’un mois BlackMa.il n’a pas de réaction de votre part, la photo et le texte original est envoyé à votre mari. Nous l’appelons le destinataire dans notre jargon. Si vous payez 1000€, l’affaire est classée et la photo n’est pas envoyée. Vous pouvez également acheter du temps de réflexion à hauteur de 10% du prix par mois. Dans notre cas, chaque tranche de 100€ vous achète un mois. Au bout d’un an, nous considérons l’affaire comme conclue. Vous ne payez donc que 2 mois supplémentaire pour étaler le paiement.

50% de la somme va directement à notre informateur, que vous ne connaîtrez jamais. Nous prenons même le soin de cacher toutes les informations cachées dans les photos ou les vidéos.

N’est-ce pas illégal ?

Cela dépend fortement des pays et de l’affaire traitée. C’est pourquoi la société qui gère le business de BlackMa.il est installée sous des cieux plus cléments. Les bureaux dans lequel vous vous trouvez sont ceux de CrowIT, la société de consultance qui fournit l’expertise informatique à BlackMa.il.

D’ailleurs, nous n’avons pas encore eu la moindre menace de procès.

Comment expliquez-vous cela ? Cela ne doit pourtant pas être de gaieté de cœur que les bourses se délient !

Tout d’abord, les gens préfèrent éviter autant que possible le scandale. BlackMa.il ne fait que l’intermédiaire. Si vous refusez de payer, BlackMa.il n’aura fait que transmettre un mail de manière entièrement automatique avec un délai d’un mois. C’est très difficile à attaquer, surtout étant donné le caractère international. Nous avons mis tout cela en place avec l’aide de plusieurs experts.

Enfin, nous offrons des garanties. Nous expliquons qu’en cas de refus nous ne sommes plus responsable de rien. Par contre, nous avons des engagements : nous n’acceptons pas de faire payer la même personne plusieurs fois pour la même information. Une fois que vous avez payé 1000€ pour votre liaison extra-conjugale, si vous recevez une nouvelle demande, vous pouvez la réfuter en nous donnant le numéro du dossier précédent et nous annulerons la transaction.

Bien que 100€ soit le paiement minimal, nous encourageons les informateurs à faire des demandes raisonnables qui ont plus de chance de recevoir une réponse positive.

Nous essayons d’être un partenaire, un intermédiaire qui ne prend pas parti.

Qu’est-ce qui empêche l’informateur de réclamer une seconde fois de l’argent  mais sans passer par Blackma.il cette fois ?

En effet. Mais dans ce cas, pourquoi utiliser Blackma.il la première fois ? Blackma.il offre un risque nul d’être identifié et facilite le paiement. De plus, nous avons acquis une solide réputation : nous nous engageons à effacer toute information relative à l’informateur à la clôture de chaque affaire. De cette manière, il devient impossible de retracer l’identité d’un auteur.

Il y a un mois, un concurrent meilleur marché est apparu en Russie. Il s’est avéré qu’après la clôture de chaque affaire, les informateurs de ce site se voyaient menacés de voir leur identité révélée si il ne payait pas une somme régulière.

Je sais que Blackma.il est souvent mal perçu mais nous avons une éthique. C’est ce qui nous différencie.

Justement, comment justifiez-vous la moralité d’une telle entreprise ?

Nos vies sont de plus en plus transparentes. Nous cachons certaines facettes de notre personnalité pour de simples conventions morales dépassées. Pourquoi une femme comme vous ne pourrait-elle pas avoir plusieurs amants ? La contraception a pourtant rendu obsolète la nécessité de la monogamie.

D’une certaine manière, BlackMa.il tente d’encourager les gens à s’assumer. Nous avons par exemple beaucoup d’affaires où l’informateur prétend rendre publique l’homosexualité du sujet. Et bien près de la moitié restent lettre morte. La menace financière pousse ces personnes à faire leur coming out, à assumer leur homosexualité. Je pense que c’est une très bonne chose.

Dans certains pays, l’adultère et l’homosexualité sont encore des délits. Ne prenez-vous pas de mesures d’exception ?

Forcer les gens à cacher leur homosexualité est de l’homophobie. C’est cela qui doit être dénoncé. En reportant une partie de la culpabilité sur le messager, on justifie l’homophobie et le rejet. Chacun doit être libre de dire qu’un autre est homosexuel comme on dit qu’il a les cheveux blonds.

Il ne doit pas y avoir que des affaires d’homosexualité.

Plus de 80% de nos affaires sont liées au sexe : infidélité, consommation de pornographie, homosexualité, enfants illégitimes, fréquentation de prostituées. La réalité est que le sexe est resté un énorme tabou.

Sur Google Images, vous pouvez trouver des images de morts, des images à caractère violent ou raciste, des armes, des horreurs sans nom. Mais, par contre, les images de corps nus sont filtrées par défaut. La mort, oui. La violence, le rejet, oui. Le sexe, non !

De manière indirecte, BlackMa.il force les gens à assumer leur sexualité. Consulter un site pornographique ne fait pas de vous un monstre mais c’est pourtant l’image que nous en avons. Jusqu’au jour où nous réalisons que 75% des adultes consomment de la pornographie.

Comment justifiez-vous les affaires à caractère non-sexuel ?

Je le répète, le sexe est notre principal fournisseur. Le second sujet récurrent est l’argent. Tout particulièrement au sein des entreprises. Un employé qui a compris que son patron détournait une partie du budget. Ou une personne qui a compris qu’une de ses connaissances a été arnaquée et qui veut sa part.

Ces affaires sont nettement moins nombreuses mais elles sont beaucoup plus lucratives. Les sommes moyennes sont multipliées par mille.

Pouvez-vous nous donner un exemple ?

Je ne souhaite pas en dire trop. Mais sachez que si quelqu’un détourne beaucoup d’argent, 10% est le plus rentable. Au dessus, le destinataire hésite à payer. Or il n’est pas rare, dans certaines sphères, d’être témoin du détournement de plusieurs millions voire dizaines de millions. Il suffit de menacer d’envoyer l’information à un journaliste.

Ici BlackMa.il joue un rôle moral comparable à WikiLeaks : il décourage les actions malhonnêtes plus sûrement que la menace d’un procès en préservant l’anonymat de l’informateur.

Et BlackMa.il prend 50% sur ces sommes ?

Le fait que nous soyons fortement intéressé assure que nous souhaitons avant tout la réussite de l’affaire. Nous éduquons nos informateurs en ce sens. Et c’est pourquoi nous autorisons l’étalement du paiement. Une affaire non-payée est une perte sèche pour BlackMa.il. Ce n’est pas dans notre intérêt.

Je préfère dire qu’il s’agit d’un partenariat équitable avec l’informateur, surtout lorsqu’on considère que tous les frais sont à notre charge.

N’avez-vous jamais de demandes de négociation ? De cas particuliers ?

C’est une des grandes forces de BlackMa.il : le destinataire ne peut pas nous contacter autrement que par un formulaire. Il peut juste répondre qu’il n’accepte pas de payer, qu’il paie (par mois ou au forfait) ou demander d’assimiler cette affaire à une autre précédemment payée. Nous ne rentrons pas dans le dialogue. D’ailleurs, le processus est entièrement automatisé. Le sujet le sait et a un mois pour prendre sa décision.

Éprouvez-vous parfois des remords ?

La grande majorité des affaires que nous traitons sont en fait déjà publiques. Ainsi, la discussion en ligne de ce mari infidèle avec son amante peut être trouvée sur Google dans les archives d’un forum. Cet homme à qui on menace de révéler sa fréquentation d’un salon de strip-tease est déjà fan dudit salon sur Facebook. Pourtant, il paie pour que le mail ne soit pas envoyé à sa femme.

Nous entrons dans une société transparente. Nous pouvons soit faire les hypocrites et cacher nos différences. Ou bien s’accepter comme nous sommes et accepter les autres.

Que faîtes-vous du droit à la vie privée ?

Mais nous le respectons tout à fait. Nous ne rendons pas publiques les affaires que nous recevons. L’information n’est jamais envoyée qu’à un ou plusieurs destinataires. La vie privée c’est pour nous comme aller aux toilettes : tout le monde le fait et pourtant nous n’apprécions pas le faire en public. Cependant, si j’envoyais une photo de vous sur le cabinet à votre mari, il ne s’en offusquerait pas. Cela n’aurait aucun intérêt. Sauf si vous avez toujours prétendu à votre mari que vous n’alliez jamais à la toilette. Mais BlackMa.il n’aura rien rendu de public.

Un mot pour conclure ?

BlackMa.il est fortement décrié. Publiquement, tout le monde s’insurge et le voue aux gémonies. Pourtant nous avons des centaines de milliers d’utilisateurs. Parmi lesquels certains de nos plus ardents détracteurs.

Mais BlackMa.il aura sur la morale mondiale le même effet d’électrochoc que Wikileaks a eu sur le monde politique. L’homme s’assumera et arrêtera de porter un jugement sur les autres. Les truands craindront de s’associer de peur de devoir s’acheter le silence l’un à l’autre. BlackMa.il a donc réellement un rôle positif et pacificateur.

I know it sounds crazy but I want you to give a try to this little experiment. During one year, you will pay for the content you consume on the web: blog posts, music, videos, nice pictures, news and even single tweets! You will pay for everything!

What? Paying for the web? Yes but…

There are two catches. The first one being that you will pay only after consuming the content and only if you liked it/found it worthwhile. It’s like going out to a movie and deciding, afterward if it worth to pay the ticket.

The second catch is that you will always spend 2€ per month, whatever content you may have consumed. At the end of the year, this experiment will then cost you only 24€. Interesting enough if you can afford it.

How to get started?

It is easy. Create an account on Flattr and send them 24€.

Once registered on Flattr, try to find the little green button each time you appreciate some content. If you don’t find it, don’t hesitate to contact the author and ask for one.

But Flattring is often possible without an explicit button. Install the Flattr extension for Chrome or Firefox and the Flattr logo will be displayed in your browser each time you will be on a “Flattrable” page. That way, you can flattr individual tweets on Twitter, videos on Vimeo, music on Soundcloud and Grooveshark, pictures on  Flickr, 500px, Instagram and software projects on Github. Yes, you can even flattr a single github commit!

If the author of that content doesn’t have a Flattr account yet, your Flattr is marked as pending. The money will be transferred from your account to the author account only when he will claim his pending Flattrs.

You can even set automatic Flattering on Grooveshark. Artists you listened to during a given month will automatically receive a Flattr that month. An external service called FlattrStar allows you to automatically Flattr content you starred in Google Reader, Readability, Instagram, Pocket and many more. It is even possible to Flattr someone in the street with your smartphone! But let’s keep that for later.

Receiving Flattrs

You are supporting the content you like. But maybe are you a content publisher yourself? Your content may be Flattered on any of the aforementioned website. If you have a blog, don’t hesitate to make each post Flattrable.

And if you comment on this very own blog, don’t hesitate to add your Flattr ID. A comment is content, after all. It might be considered useful, interesting or funny by someone else and worth a Flattrs.

The downside

If I’m a huge Flattr fanatic but there are two main critics that you should be aware of.

Firstly, Flattr is a proprietary centralized model. You have to trust them. If Flattr becomes one day extremely popular, it would have an awful lot of power. I hope to see some competitions, some distributed alternatives (using Bitcoin?). But, in the mean time, Flattr is a functional and very interesting solution.

Secondly, Flattr takes 10% on each Flattr. During your experiment, 2,4€ will then go directly to Flattr. If it makes sense to have some fee, some would like to see it lowered.

Conclusion of the experiment

Take one year to make the test. In the worst case, you only lose 24€. Losing is not a very appropriate word when you know that 21.6€ will go to the maker of content you appreciate. You can even test for only 6 months by sending 12€.

But if everything goes well, you will discover the simple pleasure of supporting what you like on the web. You will subscribe to some content in order to Flattr them during 3 or 6 months. You will find yourself raising the monthly limit to 3€, 5€ or even, if you are very rich, the maximum of 250€.

And what if the goal of earning as much as you are spending on Flattr gives you the motivation to create a blog, to publish picture on Flickr, music on SoundCloud or videos on Viméo? Don’t be ashamed: if a few euros give you the motivation, why not using that to unleash you creativity?
