Commenting mysqli.allow_persistent = On and mysqli.reconnect = On in /etc/php5/conf.d/mysqli_tweak.ini, restarting php5-fpm.

aptitude reinstall php5-mysqlnd (5.4.20-1~dotdeb.1), extension=mysqli.so is already uncommented in /etc/php5/conf.d/20-mysqli.ini
