Last time I was in touch with ESA's Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC), I was in space. Pun intended ;) In January, I tested the Haptics-2-experiment, telerobotics equipment that was linked to Earth which allowed me to operate a joystick located at ESTEC in the Netherlands.. from space! I even shook hands with some of the team members on the ground. Great to meet some of them on Earth yesterday! The purpose of the experiment is to find new ways for future astronauts to control rovers on other planets.

Passage post-vol à l’ESTEC, LE centre technique de l’ESA. La dernière fois que j’ai serré la main d’ingénieurs y travaillant, c’était… depuis l’espace ! Au cours de l’expérience Haptics-2, j’avais en effet pu sentir comme une poignée de main avec le sol grâce à un duo de joysticks (l’un étant actionné par mes soins en orbite, le second resté aux Pays-Bas). L’objectif est en fait de perfectionner des équipements en télérobotique – sur Mars, le contrôle des rovers par des astronautes depuis l’orbite sera indispensable.
