Over the shoulder

Continuing to highlight the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, number 5 is: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Megan is a role-model to me and everyone who meets her. For both my missions I have worked with great people including Megan and Peggy Whitson. But women are still a minority in engineering jobs and in space. We are 7 on the Space Station now, six men and Megan, you don't need a calculator to see there is an imbalance! ESA is looking for new astronauts and this is a chance to improve the gender equality. If you are hesitating, apply! Back to the picture... Big brother is watching you! Well, not really, but often the teams on the ground use an over-the-shoulder camera view to assist us, especially when performing advanced scientific experiments (we’re jack of all trades, but often masters of none…). Megan was her usual awesome self, spending hours at a time doing precision lab work inside this glovebox. The experiment is called celestial immunity and compares cells in space and on Earth to provide insights into new vaccines and drugs. Megan worked at mission control herself for many years so she has seen both sides of the action.
