A scan of my brain taken before spaceflight. Researchers are eager to see how it has changed once back on Earth! The ESA BRAIN-DTI project, in collaboration with Roscosmos, is using astronauts to see how our brains cope with the new environment of living in space. Although we adapt quite well, it is unique for researchers as our brains have to adapt to life out of this world, where everything is different. The research is revealing how our brains learn new things and deal with stress and helps researchers to better understand problems in patients on Earth that suffer from dizziness for example. The picture of my brain was sent to me by Ben Jeurissen if the University of Antwerp in Belgium!

Un scan de mon cerveau (scintigraphie cérébrale) effectué avant le départ pour l’espace. Les chercheurs s’intéressent de très près à son évolution à mon retour sur Terre ! Le projet BRAIN-DTI de l’ESA étudie en coopération avec l’agence russe Roscosmos l’adaptation du cerveau à l’impesanteur. La recherche révèle comment il apprend de nouvelles choses – comme se mouvoir dans un environnement en microgravité – et gère le stress. Sur Terre, l’expérience permettra d’aider les patients, comme ceux sujets au vertige, par exemple. La photo de mon cerveau m’a été envoyé par Ben Jeurissen, de l’université d’Anvers.
