The US should follow Australia by banning the guns that are handy for killing lots of people, and instituting thorough background checks for people that want to buy guns.

On the other hand, renting an apartment or enrolling in a school should not require such a background check. You can do fine without a gun, but you're really handicaped if you can't get education or a place to live.
