Identifying heat-resistant coral species, or breeding some species to be more heat-resistant, cannot possibly protect more than a fraction of the coral species that exist now. The only way to preserve reef biodiversity is to halt the increase of CO2 in the air.

Meanwhile, ocean acidification will eventually wipe out all coral and many other kinds of ocean life.
