A thug in Florida shot and killed a black man and used an unusual provision in the law to escape being tried.

The legal provision in question was not the "stand your ground" law.

The man killed was carrying an unloaded air rifle, and ignored commands to drop it because he could not hear them. The thug claimed he pointed the air rifle at the thug, but that claim is implausible and we should not believe it. A priori, it is more plausible that the thug made this up so to have a defense.

At a trial, this might have been brought out.

A thug in Toronto has been sentenced to years in prison for shooting and killing a teenager who was armed with a knife.

The court ruled that the thug was justified in shooting at first, for self-defense, but that continuing to shoot once the victim had been incapacitated was a crime.
