« One big caveat: the historical pattern is that society gets fed up and rejects some religious nastiness (human sacrifice, hereditary rulers, lynching suspected witches, subordination of women, beating children, white supremacy, straight supremacy) and for a moment it looks like rejection of religion.

But then churches not only adopt the new morality but retroactively take credit for the progress, claiming they've always been on the right side and it's the godless who were on the wrong side. And the next generation accepts this narrative. »
